Zetia

Zetia, or ezetimibe to call it by its generic name, is a drug which helps to reduce the cholesterol absorbed by the body. Zetia is a highly recommended supplement, beneficial even if your diet is healthy. If you are worried that your diet and physical exercise might not be enough to keep you in top shape, Zetia could be very useful.

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol occurs naturally in the body. It is not a disease or anything unhealthy if found in low quantities. Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in the body’s cells and bloodstream. It helps your body stay healthy as long as you don’t have too much of it. The body has two types of cholesterol. One is naturally produced by the body and accounts for 75% of typical cholesterol levels. The rest, which can lead to serious problems, enters the body when you eat certain kinds of foods, especially unhealthy and fatty types.

Zetia works by helping to lower the bad cholesterol. This in turn helps to avoid serious health problems like stroke and heart attacks.

Administration and Recommendations

• Zetia should be taken exactly as prescribed.
• You should take Zetia with a full glass of water, either with or without food.
• If you are taking any other medications, you should take it at least 2 hours before, or 4 hours after, that medicine.
• You should follow a healthy, low fat diet while taking Zetia, for best results.
• It might take a while before you notice benefits so do not suddenly stop taking the drug or alter the dosage.
• If you forget a dose, take the next dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, however, skip it. Never take 2 doses at once.

Zetia’s Possible Interaction with Other Drugs

If you are taking other medication, inform your doctor before starting Zetia. There are a number of other medications known to interact with Zetia and produce dangerous and serious effects. Some of the more common medical drugs which might cause a reaction are cyclosporine (Neoral, Gengraf), lovastin (Mevacor) and clofibrate.
